reinforcement
Animals don't mind "bartering" but they aren't likely to work for nothing at all. Can't blame them.
So you always want to deliver some sort of reinforcement, some sort of pay, after a click. Probably the bird likes things other than food, for example, freedom. So, sometimes you can click and reinforce the bird with freedom. Or maybe the bird wants to play in a water bath, or look in a mirror or play with a bell. Cue the behavior, then you can click and reinforce with the bath or mirror or bell. The trick is in understanding all the many things your bird enjoys, and using a surprising variety of things as reinforcement. Maybe your bird can learn to love playing a tug game with a toy? Or maybe he loves when you scratch around his beak? Or he loves to ride on your head? If so, you can click and reinforce with the game.
Don't think of it as weaning. In teaching and learning, we never "wean" away the reinforcement. In fact, reinforcements need to grow stronger or more frequent as we perform more challenging work, or we are likely to quit!
