 This is what I would like to send out. I would like to collect another 30 proven affected dogs and 30 proven unaffected dogs. But it is really important that the status is proven, we can not include dogs that have a murmur but have not been echoed by a cardiologist, or dogs that a general practioner cleared, we have to be sure of the status. In this study we are not really looking for families and it is actually better if they are unrelated dogs..

 

If I get enough I will try a more expensive technique that we are trying in the boxer with cardiomyopathy right now. I am going to see if I can get some funding but it would be great if we had all of the samples collected in case the funding comes through....

To clarify
Dr Meurs wants to use the newer method that does NOT require us to have families of dogs!
AFFECTED dogs must be proven affected by Doppler Echo performed by a veterinary Cardiologist
UNAFFECTED dogs MUST be deemed unaffected by a veterinary Cardiologist. Doppler echo is preferred BUT auscultated clear dogs can be submitted providing the auscultation was performed by a veterinary Cardiologist. NOT a practitioner
She needs 20-30 dogs (at minimum) from each category (affected and clear)
Her form -2 pages- is attached. (remember to include a photocopy of the pedigree for all dogs plus cardiac report- doppler and cardio report for affecteds and OFA certification and/or cardiologist report (and doppler if available) for unaffecteds)
I have three Cardiologist certified unaffected Rottweilers (2 auscultation and 1 Doppler Echo) that I will be submitting asap

Rottweiler Familial Subaortic Stenosis Study

        

We are currently looking for DNA samples from Rottweilers with a diagnosis of Subvalvular aortic stenosis (diagnosed by Doppler echocardiogram) or proven clear of Subvalvular aortic stenosis (as cleared by a cardiologist) to advance our study to identify a gene for the disease.

 

  • For the technique to work well, we need DNA samples from 20-30 affected dogs and 20-30 clear dogs

Sample collection

 

Please ask your veterinarian or a veterinary technician to pull a blood sample into an EDTA tube. Most veterinary hospitals have these readily available.

  

  1. Blood drawn into a Standard EDTA Tube does not need to be refrigerated.

  

  1. Blood draw volume should be 1 to 2 ml, if possible.

  

  1. Please label tube well, with dog’s call name and family last name and send the samples to our lab via the address above.

  

Blood drawn does not need to be mailed back with ice packs or be shipped overnight. However, if possible please try to send the sample within a few days by standard mail. Until the blood can be mailed, it is a good idea to refrigerate it (i.e., if the blood was drawn late Saturday and cannot be mailed until Monday, it’s a good idea to refrigerate it between Saturday and Monday).
