I am wondering if I begin clicker training with my new Aussie pup, will I have to use the clicker forever in order for her to continue to perform the learned behavior? Or, is the clicker just used as a means of training the behavior in the first place and then perhaps as a refresher periodically??? I appreciate any advice from you experts out there!
Thanks in advance!
Doug
Hi
Hi Doug
Welcome to the world of clickertraining.
No, you won't need to carry a clicker everywhere for ever. The clicker is an aid to teaching, used when your pet is learning new things. Then, when the new behaviour is learned, you start using praise instead of click and treats.
Remember that the clicker is a marking signal, saying "yes, that was the right thing to do, now you will get a treat" always follow the click with a reward (treat, access to something the pet wants, toys, games)
Try reading the article called 15 tips for using a clicker, by Karen Pryor, you can find it on this site, somewhere ;)
