In this audio excerpt from Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training, Karen Pryor explains the difference between a "command" and a "cue." Do you say "sit" before or after you teach the dog to sit? Is the dog trying to do something, or avoid something? And why do clicker trainers use cues, anyway?
To learn more about operant conditioning and the fundaments of clicker training, pick up the new Don't Shoot the Dog! 6 CD Set, an unabridged audiobook read by Karen Pryor, with new material by the author.

This is a great book and very easy to listen to!
I just got a copy of this Audio Book - as a community raffle prize (membership does have its advantages). It is GREAT! I have only listened to the Intro and the first chapter so far, but I am enjoying it a great deal. I am seeing how this applies not only to animals (my dog and parrot), but will also help me as a martial arts instructor.
The audio is very easy to listen to. Karen's pacing and voice are very pleasant - the content comes over very clearly and she makes the material very easy to understand. I would say that this is an essential manual for not just trainers, but for everyone who has to encourage good behavior in people or animals - employers, coaches, parents - basically everyone, even children.
