I'm alwas on the look out for healthy options in rabbit treats. I have even been trying to introduce several new options that would be more healthful, for I have heard that if you want to use something as a treat, you need first to introduce it as a food. So I have, in addition to the usual Manzuri/Ecotrition mix added little bits of Equal, a colorful new rabbit feed which I hope to use as a treat, and little bits of dried papaya and dried banana from Kaytee, that are included as special toppings for meals. The dried papaya is already a hit as a treat with Dorcas, a little bit with Maddie.
I have never had luck using raisins, but I think now that the rabbits trust me more, I may try to introduce them to them again. And the latest thing that has been suggested to me I definitely have to try -- Craisins! If I can get my rabbits to use craisins and raisins, I would be really thrilled. I find it hard to stock treats from the local PetsMart and PetCos -- they just do not consistently stock small animal treats. I worry that I will find a new treat, like the papaya and then not be able to get it on a regular basis, or have to special order it and then wait -- treat-free while the rabbits look on in perplexity -- before I can pick it up at the pet store. So I would really like it if the Craisins worked for my rabbits, even more so if raisins worked for them.
The good news is that at least they are transitioning away from the yogurt treats and the very large carrot cake treats that they used to enjoy. This is good because I don't think either of these treats is particularly good for them anyway.
My next area of inquiry will be what I can use for treats on an immature digestive tract, like what the Flemish Giant will have when we get him in August. I suppose that is something that I can post on agility/group on Yahoo. . . Any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. . . .
