Since I do pet sitting, I have many opportunities to try things with several dogs. My latest is a twist on "sit". I have had interesting results. So far, I have done this with 3 dogs...Seeker (my dog), Gunner and Major. All three have a pretty reliable sit...Seeker's default behavior is "sit".
What I did....when the dog was outside and wanted in, I cracked the door open slightly and gave the sit cue.
On the first trial, all three dogs just stood there looking at the door like "What?" Seeker sat after about 20 seconds, Gunner 30 and Major didn't. (I waited about 45 seconds) All three needed multiple repeats of the cue.
Second trial...Seeker sat after two cues. 10 seconds....Gunner one cue, 15 seconds and Major 3 cues 30 seconds.
Third trial to be announced. :-)
I must learn to say the cue once and wait. I am sooooo impatient!!!! lol
Would be interesting to know how other dogs do at this.
