The real-life benefits of training

Filed in - training - obedience - peach - recalls

We took the day off from training yesterday since we had a pretty tough session at the club.

But this morning, my training paid off. I didn't latch the gate to the dog yard completely and the dogs got out; they were likely running loose for 10 minutes. We own 3.5 acres and live on a street where people routinely drive 60 mph. The two older dogs were hanging out on the patio, just waiting for mama to open the door, but Peach was nowhere to be found.

I ran around the back of our property, calling and yelling, to no avail. Peach likes to hunt and has a keen nose, so I knew she could be anywhere. I ran around to the front and just a moment before she heard me calling, I spotted her in our front flower beds. When she heard me calling, she ran straight to me. Since I work with pet owners who regularly chase and throttle their dogs before learning that this is a bad idea, I was so proud of my little girl and so happy that I've always taught her that coming to me is the best thing in the world. And I'm so happy my Peach is okay!
