Gear up for spring with activities that you and your dog can do together! Dog sports like agility are a great way to spend quality time with your dog, strengthen your communication, and advance your training. In celebration of the anniversary of the ground-breaking agility book, Agility Right from the Start, the authors share audio excerpts from the book that agility enthusiasts describe as a must-have resource for beginners and experts alike. In this month’s feature article How to Teach Your Dog Left and Right, Aidan Bindoff outlines a plan for teaching a skill that is useful for many dog sports, including agility, herding, mushing, water dog, and retrieving. Why not learn something new? This month’s ClickFlick, How to Teach the Basics of “Treibball,” shows how to get started in this exciting new sport. |

Karen Pryor Academy Featured Certified Training Partner
Janine Gauthier
Janine has always been fascinated by human-dog attachment and became a dog trainer to help further that bond. A crossover trainer, Janine saw how traditional training methods did nothing to help achieve that closeness. “I saw first-hand how these methods do nothing to create trust between dog and handler. They do not create the path to a ‘companion’ dog.”
In search of a better way, Janine discovered the Karen Pryor Academy Dog Trainer Program and knew she had found what she was looking for. “After the first month of school, I was hooked. I had a fearful shelter dog as my clicker project. She was afraid of a piece of paper dropping on the floor. That first month she learned how to jump into a box, turn her head to the right, and lick her lips. What?? My dog, Chai-Latte, became a willing student of the clicker and her handler—ME!!”
In March 2010, Janine finally made her dream a reality when she became a KPA Certified Training Partner (CTP). “Clicker training has not only given me the physical tool of a clicker, but the mental tools of how to approach a training situation and how to relate this amazing skill to other humans. My plans for clicker training are being realized as we speak. My clients are having fun AND training. My client dogs are getting the companion they deserve.”
See Janine and Chai-Latte on local TV in North Carolina as they demonstrate how easy communication between trainer and dog can be with the use of a clicker. Watch the segment.
