Karen Pryor Academy Featured Certified Training Partner
Lisbeth Plant
Lisbeth Plant

Lisbeth Plant is a dog-training coach in Cobble Hill, on southern Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Her love of dogs began at age 13 with her first dog, a dachshund named Dino. At the time, Dino was one of the few dachshunds active in obedience training and trials.

Lisbeth was volunteering with a local dog obedience club when she made the decision to become a dog trainer. After researching programs, she discovered Karen Pryor Academy (KPA). Lisbeth graduated from KPA in 2009 and started her own dog training business, Cowichan Canine Behaviour & Training. She offers group classes, day training, and private in-home training lessons and behavior consultations in the Cowichan Valley region on southern Vancouver Island. Lisbeth says, "Going through the program was a life-changing experience for me. I learned so much about animal learning and behavior that I felt compelled to share that knowledge in my local community."

Shortly after Cowichan Canine was founded, Bev Maahs began to volunteer there. Bev graduated from KPA in May 2011, and joined Cowichan Canine as an employee. Another volunteer, Karen Grieder, has recently been accepted into the KPA Dog Trainer Program.

Lisbeth is a firm believer in continuing education for professional dog trainers. She is a founding member and a director of the Vancouver Island Animal Training Association (VIATA), which is now in its second year. The VIATA promotes force-free training, provides educational opportunities for pet professionals, and educate the general public about the importance of screening pet professionals before employing them.

"The business of dog training is completely unregulated in North America. We need to raise the standards of the profession and, ideally, make it a recognized and regulated profession. Too much harm is being done by uneducated trainers," states Lisbeth.

Lisbeth is also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, the Animal Behavior Society, and the Behavior Education Network.
