Conversations on a slow road with "re-homed" animals
By BlueHairBob on 02/20/2007You know the story: a couple of clicks to charge the clicker and then we get sit, lie down, and fetch before anybody gets bored. It looks like magic. With a poorly socialized animal it is a different story - it's a rewarding story, but slow. Once you get the trust, things pick up, but trust has to be built - a few treats don't make up for years of mistrust.
Kilo Lani - my second parrot
By BlueHairBob on 01/22/2007One day I put out my hand for him to step up - since he appeared to want me to - and he bit my finger! I looked at my hurting finger and immediately remembered the words of Bruce Lee, "It is like a finger pointing to the moon - don't look at the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory!"
How long does it take to get a parrot?
By BlueHairBob on 01/22/2007There are two ways to get a parrot fast: 1) buy one at a pet store with no planning on a whim, or 2) be known as someone who will take in an unwanted bird and give them a loving home. Of course, in order to do the second option, you have to have put in the long hard work to become that person.
