paper to outside housetraining 17 week old mini wirehaired dachshund

Filed in - Puppy plan

hi,

i am the daytime babysitter for a 17 week old male mini wirehaired dachshund.

he is partially paper trained- will mostly go on the paper, but not always.

we are trying to transition him to potty outside. sometimes he pees outside, never poops- sometimes he'll pee on the paper after a lengthy time outside of me encouraging him to get 'busy-busy"

the owner doesnt like to confine him, so has run of the whole house when she's home, and partially retricted to the living room and kitchen when he's alone and when i'm there (7am-6pm).

he was partially crated trained but the owner decided not to continue. he was pretty keyed up about being left alone in the crate and had some accidents in it. i am trying to teach him to like a different crate(plastic not metal, smaller) and he is so far sleeping in it during the day with door open and during training sessions he enthusiastically goes in and lets me shut the door.

should we continue to use the papers? if we do, should we reinforce that or not?

i have taught him sit, down, rollover, whisper, wait, off, leave it, give- all using the clicker training i've picked up on this website - so i know he can learn.

any suggestions would be greatly welcome

many thanks-i am a huge fan of clickertraining!jen

Time for 'outside only'

Hi Jen, I would transition out the paper training, use it only for times when you cannot possibly supervise and may not be able to take pup out for a little while. Paper training is something you want to fade out as quickly as you can.

Crate training is immensely useful but you have to do it right. I suggest you follow the plan given in Sue Ailsby's excellent "Book of Training Levels" which you can find online at http://www.dragonflyllama.com - it's free, too.

Make sure you clean up any accidents with an enzyme cleaner specifically for removing pet urine odours. Normal cleaners won't do the job properly and your pup will always be able to smell the urine even if you can't, triggering further accidents.

Regards,

Aidan
