i have recently had the delight to have a 8 week golden retriever into my family (4 kids 2-11)however on returning from the breeders he has decided that the food we put in his bowl is now not good enough for him even though it is the same food he was feed on at the breaders. He looks at it, sniffs it and take a few morsals then walks away. We take the bowl away after about 5 minutes (fed in a quiet area) Any ideas why he is doing this, he is on his 5th day with us and still not overly interested. Also do not give any large treats outside of the meal times only some during introduction of clicker training. Any advise welcome
Thanks

My Pomeranian wont eat
I have been frustrated on the net for weeks and weeks now trying to find out WHY my Pomeranian wont eat. I got him at 11 weeks old. He has been a problem eater from the very day. Breeder gave me food he was eating and soon as he reached home he has never touched it again. I have been to the vet three times with him. He is a SOUND and healthy, had stool, xray, blood tests done and he is fine.
WHY wont he eat? Vet recommended I cook for him. He ate two days and never again. I have been syringe feeding him pureed, he is now 4 months and he has to eat. I make him things that even I would eat except all the heavy seasonings, they are tasty nutritious and good for him. He wont eat. He has been giving me real hell since Last Saturday. I dont konw if he is protesting the dog school? he does not like it there, and every time I come back from the school I have real hell with him. This makes 7 days he has not had a proper meal on his own. He refuses everything, it does not matter what. I even give him chicken brast cut up, beef cubes cooked or raw, I give him fish baked, I give him chicken legs cooked without the bones in rice, barley, carrts, potatoes etc he wont touchit. I make pureed veges he wont touch it whole so I puree it to syringe feed him. Today I have stopped the syringe as he may think this is theonly means of food. Crap I wont do this. HE HAS TO EAT. I have never seen a dog that refuses all forms of food. I have tried every good quality food in tins and sacks. HE WONT EAT anything. May nibble a raw carrot but that is all. How long can he keep this up? NO, he does not get treats unless it is a day he has eaten and they are microscopic bits of cheese.
This morning he ate 10gm of raw beef, he has had NOTHIGN since then, he has refused everything I have given him. What ´should I do? Training is stressful and I have not started the clicker yet as I myself if confused with this.
Can someone please help? He is about 3lbs now and 4 months old
I think I answered you in another thread?
But you supply a bit more info here.
My thoughts are: dogs are creatures of habit. HE might just not like so many changes in his food. And IMHO you do risk upsetting his tummy by changing food so often - it is generally recommended to let every change of food take a week, changing about 15% at a time.
Definitely stop the syringe. Ad BTW a dog can also very fast figure out that if it does not eat, something tastier will be offered. Stop trying so many things.
A healthy dog do not - absolutely not - starve itself to death.
Have a talk with your vet. Decide which food to offer your dog, do that in cooperation with your vet, to make sure the dog gets a wellbalanced meal, no matter if you homecook or buy. Let your vet help you figure out exactly how much of the food you choose is needed for each day. Measure that amount out every morning. Give your dog a meal consisting of 1/3 the daily ration. Leave the bowl for him for 20 minutes then take it away. Give him ...oh like... three or four meals like that depending on how much he eats. And keep up a schedule...everything at the same time each day.
Use 1/3 the daily ration for training.
If he really hates the dog school you might need to look for another option to reduce stress (at least for a while)
Weigh him every few days (at the same time of day each time) and make a chart. If he gets into a curve of weight loss bring dog and curve to the vets again.
do all this in close contact with your vet.
best of luck

hhmmm
an 8 week old puppy that has been eating only a little for 5 days? Take him to a vet. Just to be sure he is ok. Please.
