Hi, I'm new here, I ordered an i-click some time ago. well I never got around to trying it, I guess i was a bit skeptical and afraid my two donkeys would be mugging me all the time. My donkey's names are Daisy ( 7 yr old BLM'er) and Martha ( 3-4yr old BLM'r offspring).
I got Daisy first, she was pretty easy compared to most donkeys, I was able to work with her feet after amonth of having her. Now i can saddle, bridle and get on her with no problems, she's also great for the farrier. So she was an excellent 'first' donkey. Then I got Martha for her as a buddy. A kind lady gave her to me, becuase she did not have enough time to work wiht her, she did however halter break her.
I've had Martha 2months now, I've been going about her training like Daisy's, but due to her age and lack of handling, she just wasn't moving along very fast. She was a bit fearful and easily overwhelmed. So i still had this clicker laying around.
I decided yesterday - what the heck I'll try it. WOW, all I can say is WOW. before I could only pet down to martha's front knees, then she'd say 'none of it' and move away from me, and usually the more I persisted the more irritated she became. She just didn't want any of it. Within ten minutes of our first session I was holding her right front hoof in my hand, with no resistance!!!
I could not believe it. The left one was more difficult, and the furthest I got was getting her to give while i held her leg up at the knee.
So fast forward to today, i decide to go see what she remembered. She let me pick up the 'good' one right away. then i started asking for it longer, and longer. Then started introducing the hoof pick - let me tell you the first couple times were interesting, while I tried to figure out how to hold all my 'tools'. LOL
a couple more times and I was cleaning her foot! it was amazing!!
then onto the bad side, we got a give at the knee, then the pastern, and soon i was able to hold that one in 'position'. Then i worked her up like the other one, having her let me have it a little more, and a little more. Then introduced the pick, and got to clean that one too!!
I just cannot believe how much this helped break us through this tough spot! I can't wait to see what we can accomplish with clicker training!!
Both of these sessions took place in the 12' x 12' stall - unhaltered/tied, so if she wants to move away she could. but she never did really. and when she let me have her feet, she was really soft.
so happy with the results so far!!
I will keep you updated!
THANK YOU!!!
Cool!
Neat! Its amazing what you can do with clicker training! :) Never heard on clicker training a donkey- but hey! Thats really neat!
awesome!
Sounds awesome!
I find my horses "get" clicker training super fast. After that, it's so much speedier to use clicker training than "traditional" methods. I'd love to hear more about how your donkey training goes!
I love donkeys. They are some of the sweetest creatures ever.
I have a few pictures of some of ours here:
