Hi, I am a newb wanting to know ALL I can. I am a hired Dog Trainer @ Petco since Nov. 2nd 2009. I am anxious to learn all I can on breed behavior. I realize dogs, like humans, have their own personality types and can be very individual. But my question is what breed book is the best one for learning about all breed behaviors? Thank you all......God bless you Karen for all your hard work!
Hello there!
There really isn't one book that does it all. Breed characteristics don't really matter. Like you said they all have different personality types and are individuals. When you train dogs please don't say "Oh he's a pitbull, that's why he's aggressive" or "oh he's an english bull dog, he's supposed to be stubborn" because I hear that all the time at the local petco/petsmarts and makes stereotypes. This one lady told me "He's a GERMAN dachshund, so thats why he bites strangers" thats rather ridiculous right?? Not saying you will but it frustrates me when they blame the breed.
ANYWAYS enough of that stuff and back to the books! I suggest these books:
1. The Dog Breed Bible
2. Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds
3. Legacy of the Dog
-Happy Days!
