Clicker Training to Address Scracthing By My Cat

Friends,

In past years I've had plently of dogs and have trained them to be good citizens using Karen's methods. Well I recently got my very first cat--adopted him from local animal shelter. He is TERRIFIC and we're becoming fast friends. The only behavior I have to address is scratching my furniture. I know that it normal and natural for cats scratch. The problem is that he is ignoring the highly (Purrfect Post) recommended scratching posts I bought him. Tall, sturdy, made of sisel, with catnip rubbed on. But he won't look at them and instead goes for the furniture. As much as I love him and buy him the best of everthing, I can't let him destroy my furniture.  In the informational material that Karen wrote for this web  site she points out that cats can be trained and I know that. However, I can't find anywhere where it is clear that I can train my cat to scratch his posts on not my furniture.

'm glad to be a member of this user's group and will look forward to your help.

Clicker Training to Address Scratching By My Cat

Hi Cary,

You may want to try changing the environment, maybe by moving the scratch post to a different location. You could also make it more attractive by  hanging a new toy to attract his attention.  Click for sniffing the new place and then for actual scratching. You'll also want to cover his favorite inappropriate scratching spots with plastic, at least temporarily.  For more tips on cat training, check out Karen's book Getting Started Clicker Training for Cats, available in the clickertraining.com store.

Best,
