Can anyone please help? My dog whines and whines in the car on the way to the park for his walk, he loves sticking his head out the window but even whines when he's doing this! I realise he's excited because he seldom does it on the way home. But this is driving both my partner and me nuts!
We're new to clicker training and he's a highly intelligent 1yr old pavement special, although he looks like a border collie spaniel cross.
Thanks!
Please do keep us updated!
I would love to hear how this works out for you. There are a ton of puzzle toys out there on the market. These toys the dogs have to figure out how to get the food out. That might be a fun thing for him to keep focused on as well, and the added benefit of rewarding him while he is doing it too.
Nay
Does the whining start before the car starts moving?
Does the whilning start before the car starts moving? If not, I wonder if it would help to practice 'get in the car' and reward, 'get out' and reward a hundred times. From there maybe move to starting the car for just a second?
I keep hearing about a kind of classical conditioning called 'desensitization' - I'm not sure what that is, but wonder if that is what you need.
Best Wishes,
RB
Think about what you want
With clicker training, down to the bare bones, it is all about ignoring the behavior you don't want and rewarding the behavior you do. So, I would suggest in this case, reward any behavior that isn't whining. Also, have toys and chews in the car for him to play with. He can't whine and chew or play at the same time.
Good luck!
Thank you so much! Will try
Thank you so much! Will try the toy thing, I think he'll most likely respond best to this. I'm afraid he hasn't responded at all to our ignoring him, he just becomes louder and eventually starts howling. It was the first thing I tried.
Squirting him with water also didn't help as he hasn't made the connection between whining and punishment, he's not sure what he's doing wrong. & doesn't stop whinning long enough for us to reward him! I'm also not sure that he'd know what he was being rewarded for!
Although he's incredibly smart, because its a natural thing for him to do rather than a being a behavioural thing.
Will keep you posted on how well it works.
Thanks
