I started clicker training about 8 years ago, I should say I tried clicker training. I was able to teach my cat to sit and lie down on command, but then i just stopped. I wasn't experianced ny any means and by just goofing around I was able to get her to do the two tricks. I just adopted my 3rd kitten and decided to see if he will become my "trick" cat since he is seeming to be willing. (He's 3 months old).
I started today with charging the clicker (a new term to me). I wasn't sure how long, or how many treats to give so I gave about 20 very thin small shavings of summer sausage. I stopped when the kitten would consistantly look at the clicker while waiting (he was sitting and quiet too).
I quit with him and about 3 hours later I brought him back in for a few minutes and started recall. I was not sure how to do it as I am used to training dogs and making them follow you. I waited until he took a few steps and clicked. After two tries I made him come closer amd after 10 treats he was walking fully up to me. I stopped the training session since we were both ahead.
I now have a kitten following me everywhere now =).
Tomorrow if all goes well I will try and throw in a cue word or is it still to early?
Excited to get back into CT!
When to add a cue
I only start adding a cue when the behavior is reliable. You want the animal to know, 'this is what they want!' And then once the animal is showing it on a conistant basis you can add in the cue. It is all up to the animal, and their pace of learning.
Have fun with your kitty clicker training! Sounds like a blast for the two of you!
