I just got a beagle dog, today. She is 3 or 4 years old-- the vets are not sure because she was a stray found in my backyard. I am pretty sure that she had another family (or got dropped off) because her health was perfect except for some cuts she has that the vet said, are about 5 or more days old. I think that we might end up keeping her though because even though we have looked on Craigslist and on many streets for any possible missing dog signs, we have found nothing.
Today has been pretty stressful for her. We are going to look around for about one more week untill we claim her as ours. I really hope we get to keep her, but at the same time, if her family is looking for her I don't want them to not have her.
Anyways, getting to the point. I know this has nothing to do with clicker training currently, but do she is pretty nervous. Does anyone know how to make a new dog feel more at home? Please answer and thank you!
I'm glad you are sheltering
I'm glad you are sheltering this lost dog. I agree with Laurie and thought I would add a
couple of things you can do besides letting the shelter know you have this dog. Put a free ad
in every paper you can along with free ads on Craigs List. Run them for at least 2 or 3 weeks
and keep looking to see if anyone is looking for him. If you have a FaceBook page that is another
way to let people know. This dog may not be from your area, and his owners may not know
that he is lost if someone else was caring for him.
It's a terrible thing to loose a pet and not know what happened. It's like loosing a family member
Good luck what ever happens.

New Dog!
You are very kind to take in the stray dog. Have you checked with the local shelters to make sure no one has contacted them about a missing beagle? In the meantime, you can help the stray feel more at home by keeping her on a regular schedule, having a consistent rule structure, and by keeping things low-key for er. Generally, make things as predictable as possible for the dog. Lots of kind words, petting and scratching and leashed walks will probably help a lot, too. Keep up the good work. I hope you can reuinite her with her owners -- or if not, I hope you can continue to take care of this very lucky dog!
