Why Train Your Dog?

Regardless of a dog's breed, size, or age, he can benefit from good leadership, household rules, exercise, and training. Whether your training goal is to have a high-scoring obedience competitor or a dog that is a well-mannered family member, the fundamental ingredient for success is the same. The bond between you and the dog will pave the way to training success.

Managing the behaviors you don't want

With clicker training, you can handle undesirable behaviors in various ways—without using punishment. One way is to train an incompatible behavior: train the dog who likes to jump on strangers to sit nicely instead, for example. It's important to recognize that some behaviors you may not like are quite natural animal behaviors, and are best dealt with through household management. (The easiest way to keep your dog from chewing shoes, for example, is to avoid leaving shoes around your dog.) Remember: reward the behaviors you like, and find creative solutions to the behaviors you don't. Your dog wants to please you—and it's all about communication. That's where the clicker comes in.
